Hangzhou Hubin Yintai in77 hosted a Tiffany & Co. art installation built around the Bird on a Rock design.

The venue

Hangzhou Hubin Yintai in77 is a retail complex in the Hubin area of Hangzhou, close to West Lake and the surrounding pedestrian streets. It is divided into lettered blocks, and Block A houses jewellery and fashion tenants across several levels. Interior circulation runs between shopfronts and open floor areas where freestanding displays can be placed.

How the space was used

For this one-day presentation, Block A was given over to an art installation based on Jean Schlumberger's Bird on a Rock design, first drawn in 1965. The installation presented the bird-perched-on-stone motif as a sculptural object, with the surrounding retail floor used for viewing and circulation. Attendance figures and installation dimensions are not verified.

The mall's position near West Lake brings both local shoppers and visitors through its blocks, and its jewellery tenants give a display of this kind a relevant commercial setting. Open floor areas inside Block A allow a freestanding installation to be viewed from several angles without interrupting the retail layout.
