Shanghai's historic Rong Zhai mansion hosted a limited-run dining and cultural collaboration between Prada and Wong Kar-wai.

Rong Zhai is a century-old mansion in Shanghai with classical Shanghainese architectural details. Prada has restored the building and used it since 2017 as a cultural venue, normally presenting exhibitions and cultural projects within its historic rooms. Its residential scale and preserved architectural fabric distinguish it from a museum or a retail space, making it suited to intimate, narrative-led programming.
For this project the mansion's rooms were used for a limited-run dining and cultural experience. The programme combined a dual-chef menu with spatial narrative and mirrored visual language, placing dining within the historic interiors. Circulation moved through the house rather than a single hall, with food, design and film references layered into the existing rooms.
Rong Zhai works for this kind of project because it is already a heritage venue used for cultural presentation, not a neutral white box. Its domestic rooms and historical detailing support intimate dining and narrative staging, allowing a brand to layer contemporary visual and gastronomic concepts onto an existing Shanghai architectural context.
