Louis Vuitton at Yuyuan Department Store — Louis Vuitton SS22 Men's Pop-Up (2022)

Yuyuan Department Store on Yuyuan Road hosted a week-long Louis Vuitton men's pop-up built as a birch forest and chessboard set.

The venue

Yuyuan Department Store is a low-rise, street-front retail building at 1018 Yuyuan Road in Jing'an, Shanghai, on a walkable stretch of small shops, cafes and converted heritage buildings. The former department store now operates as a mixed retail and lifestyle space across a few floors, with shopfront glazing facing the pavement and interiors that read as a sequence of rooms rather than an open hall.

How the space was used

For the SS22 men's project the interiors were built out as a birch-forest set crossed by a chessboard floor, the two motifs carried over from the runway. Oversized sculptures reproducing runway looks were placed among the trunks, and visitors moved through the rooms on a single route past them. Garments and accessories sat within the same set rather than on separate fixtures.

Why it works here

Small street-front buildings on Yuyuan Road already work as a sequence of rooms, which suits an installation that depends on a route and changing views rather than on open floor area. The address sits inside a walkable retail strip, so a week-long pop-up meets passing foot traffic as well as booked visitors.
