The venue

Piazza di Spagna is a historic public square in central Rome, laid out at the foot of the Spanish Steps. The square is open to pedestrians and framed by buildings, with the Fontana della Barcaccia in its lower area. It functions as a passage between the steps, surrounding streets and nearby shopping districts rather than as an enclosed venue.

How the space was used

For this project, the square hosted a Dior Christmas tree on 13 December 2023. The tree was placed within the open plaza as a seasonal focal point, with the surrounding square remaining a public thoroughfare. The record does not document additional zones, structures or programme, so the installation is understood as a single object within the existing streetscape.

Why it works here

A landmark public square at the foot of the Spanish Steps, it allows a seasonal installation to be encountered by people moving through the city rather than by a ticketed audience. The open ground and multiple approaches make it suited to a single, viewable object that becomes part of the square's circulation.
