Zhangyuan, a restored shikumen lane quarter in Shanghai, hosted Dior's festive pop-up carnival through the winter season.

Zhangyuan is a restored block of stone-gate lane houses in Jing'an, central Shanghai, where early twentieth-century shikumen residences, courtyards and narrow lanes have been reopened as a public quarter of shops, galleries and event spaces. Buildings sit close together along pedestrian-only lanes, with small open courts between them, so visitors move through the district on foot rather than past a single facade.
The carnival occupied the lanes and courtyards as a walking route. Star-shaped installations and circus motifs were placed between the stone-gate buildings, lit for evening viewing. Makeup and fragrance displays sat within the courtyards, adding scent and product areas to the outdoor path, so the visit unfolded as a sequence of encounters rather than one enclosed room.
Heritage lane quarters suit seasonal brand pop-ups because the pedestrian lanes and courtyards already work as a route: installations can be placed between buildings, evening lighting reads against old brick and stone, and the historic setting gives a temporary project a distinct backdrop without building a shell.
